An early photo, standing on Broadgate, looking down Smithford Street with the City Hotel at the right and the Piggott Boot & Shoe shop at the left, not yet the four storey King’s Head Hotel building that would be built there as a development of the King’s Head Inn, the next building to it in Smithford Street. 1830 records also list a William Piggott, boot and shoe maker of Little Park Street.
Below: A similar view.
A crossroads: standing on High Street with Smithford Street up ahead, Hertford Street to the left where Piggott Boots and Shoes is, with Broadgate to the right. The City Hotel on the corner of Smithford and Broadgate.
The Piggott shop now has a sign painted on the building.
Looking out from Hertford Street towards the City Hotel And Restaurant.
The City Hotel eventually became the Burton’s building. I think the whole building was demolished and rebuilt but it does look a bit similar.
